    Joint exploration model based light field image coding: A comparative study

The recent light field imaging technology has been attracting a lot of interests due to its potential applications in a large number of areas including Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality (VR/AR), Teleconferencing, and E-learning. Light Field (LF) data is able to provide rich visual information such as scene rendering with changes in depth of field, viewpoint, and focal length. However, Light Field data usually associates to a critical problem - the massive data. Therefore, compressing LF data is one of the main challenges in LF research. In this context, we present in this paper a comparative study for compressing LF data with not only the widely used image/video coding standards, such as JPEG-2000, H.264/AVC, HEVC and Google/VP9 but also with the most recent image/video coding solution, the Joint Exploration Model. In addition, this paper also proposes a LF image coding flow, which can be used as a benchmark for future LF compression evaluation. Finally, the compression efficiency of these coding solutions is thoroughly compared throughout a rich set of test conditions

    PROVISION CAPACITY OF SERVICE DELIVERY FACILITIES FOR CHILDREN WITH HEARING LOSS IN HAI PHONG, VIETNAM

    Objective: Hearing loss is a commonly occurring disability that affects 466 million people worldwide. This study aimed at determining the actual situations of early intervention delivery facilities for children with hearing loss. Out of this affected population, 7% are children (34 million) who, along with their families, grapple with the serious lifelong problems that accompany the disease. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with facilities investigated consisting of a school for the deaf, hospitals, an audiology center, and a social agency in Hai Phong province from January 2013 to December 2014. A sample composed of 353 children was also recruited. Results: The examined facilities suffer from shortcomings in provision capacity, which manifest in deficient materials, supplies and equipment, and human resources; the lack of interdisciplinary coordination of activities; inadequate community awareness; and the unaddressed need for early detection and intervention. The conditions of most of the children (98%) were detected by their families, and among those who were clinically diagnosed, the majority (76.8%) received such diagnosis at central hospitals. Hearing impairment among the children were detected, diagnosed, and subjected to intervention at a very late stage (on average, at ages 22.3, 34, and 32.5 months, respectively), thereby compelling up to 63.6% of the families to struggle with their children’s hearing loss. Conclusion: Solutions to current interventions are needed to enhance service delivery systems and guarantee early detection as well as timely and appropriate treatment

    UV-Vis spectrophotometry and chemometrics as tools for recognition of the biochemical profiles of organic banana peels (Musa sp.) according to the seasonality in southern Brazil

    Banana (Musa sp.) has received wide interest in popular and scientific medicine because of its rich composition in bioactive metabolites, e.g., phenolic compounds, found in interesting concentrations in its peel. Banana peel is a residue that is under-exploited by the industry. Thus, with the intention to give a destination to this by-product towards health care or cosmetics industries, we evaluated its aqueous extract (AE) as a source of bioactive phenolic compounds, aiming at to apply them in future studies of biological activities. For that, in this study samples of banana peels were chemically profiled throughout the year to identify the best harvest time of those biomasses regarding their phenolic composition. In this sense, we used additional information on the chemical heterogeneity of the samples determined by the seasoning, through a set of analytical and climatic data to elaborate chemometric models, supported by bioinformatics tools. Through PCA and HCA analyzes, it was detected that low temperatures; normally observed in winter; strongly modulate the banana metabolism, leading to increased amounts of phenolic compounds, and improving the antioxidant activity of the banana peel AE.     Teacher returnees from overseas programs in the west: a narrative study in Vietnam

    In this narrative inquiry research, our focus was on exploring teacher identity within the context of the expanding field of language teacher education and professional development. Utilizing theories of teacher identities to analyze data from interviews and reflections, we observed that conversations and stories were frequently shared in social settings, with overseas teaching practices being a substantial influence on their reflections. The findings indicated that the participants' teacher identities continually changed and dynamically evolved, particularly influenced by their engagement in overseas educational programs. Upon their return, participants expressed hope in maintaining their newly transformed perspectives on teaching and learning. In conclusion, we discussed further research directions and implications to underscore the ongoing significance of this topic

    Biomarker-Based HIV Incidence in a Community Sample of Men Who Have Sex with Men in Paris, France

    BACKGROUND: Population-based estimates of HIV incidence in France have revealed that men who have sex with men (MSM) are the most affected population and contribute to nearly half of new infections each year. We sought to estimate HIV incidence among sexually active MSM in Paris gay community social venues. METHODOLOGY/ PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2009 in a sample of commercial venues such as bars, saunas and backrooms. We collected a behavioural questionnaire and blood sample. Specimens were tested for HIV infection and positive specimens then tested for recent infection by the enzyme immunoassay for recent HIV-1 infection (EIA-RI). We assessed the presence of antiretroviral therapy among infected individuals to rule out treated patients in the algorithm that determined recent infection. Biomarker-based cross-sectional incidence estimates were calculated. We enrolled 886 MSM participants among which 157 (18%) tested HIV positive. In positive individuals who knew they were infected, 75% of EIA-RI positive results were due to ART. Of 157 HIV positive specimens, 15 were deemed to be recently infected. The overall HIV incidence was estimated at 3.8% person-years (py) [95%CI: 1.5-6.2]. Although differences were not significant, incidence was estimated to be 3.5% py [0.1-6.1] in men having had a negative HIV test in previous year and 4.8% py [0.1-10.6] in men having had their last HIV test more than one year before the survey, or never tested. Incidence was estimated at 4.1% py [0-8.3] in men under 35 years and 2.5% py [0-5.4] in older men. CONCLUSIONS/ SIGNIFICANCE: This is the first community-based survey to estimate HIV incidence among MSM in France. It includes ART detection and reveals a high level of HIV transmission in sexually active individuals, despite a high uptake of HIV testing. These data call for effective prevention programs targeting MSM engaged in high-risk behaviours

    Investigation of Sodium Manganese Oxide Nanowires Synthesized by Hydrothermal Method for Alkaline Ion Battery

    Sodium Manganese Oxide (NaxMnO2) has attracted much attention as cathode materials for alkaline ion battery due to the ability of fast charge and discharge ion Na+, in particular in nanoscale. We report on the synthesis of NaxMnO2 nanowires via hydrothermal synthesis route from Mn2O3 and NaOH solution. The morphological observation indicates that the obtained Na0.44MnO2 nanowires with diameters of about 20-30 nm, length up to several micrometers were formed by this process. The electrochemical properties of fabricated materials were investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry technique and show that Sodium Manganese Oxide (NaxMnO2) is a promising material in the field of research and fabrication alkaline ion battery

    Illumination-Aware Hallucination-Based Domain Adaptation for Thermal Pedestrian Detection

    Thermal imagery is emerging as a viable candidate for 24-7, all-weather pedestrian detection owning to thermal sensors’ robust performance for pedestrian detection under different weather and illumination conditions. Despite the promising results obtained from combining visible (RGB) and thermal cameras in multi-spectral fusion techniques, the complex synchronization requirements, including alignment and calibration of sensors, impede their deployment in real-world scenarios. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach for domain adaptation to enhance the performance of pedestrian detection based solely on thermal images. Our proposed approach involves several stages. Firstly, we use both thermal and visible images as input during the training phase. Secondly, we leverage a thermal-to-visible hallucination network to generate feature maps that are similar to those generated by the visible branch. Finally, we design a transformer-based multi-modal fusion module to integrate the hallucinated visible and thermal information more effectively. The thermal-to-visible hallucination network acts as domain adaptation, allowing us to obtain pseudo-visual and thermal features using solely thermal input. Based on the experimental results, it is observed the mean average precision (mAP) increases by 4.72% and the miss rate decreases by 7.56% on the KAIST dataset when compared to the baseline model
